Sri Aurobindo Foundation for Indian Culture (SAFIC), Sri Aurobindo Society organized its special lecture 2020 on the 1st of March. This lecture was delivered by the most renowned Prof. Gurumurthy ji. The topic of the special lecture was ‘Indian Culture, Spirituality and Modern Day Economics’ on which he spoke elaborately highlighting how is Indian culture and spirituality connected with modern day economics; how is economic growth connected with spiritual rejuvenation.
The program started by a few invocations by young Pushkar reciting the Vedic chants which was followed by a Ganesha Vandana by Krupashree and Devashree, two elegant singers.
After the invocation Dr. Sampadananda Mishra, Director, SAFIC gave the welcome address in which he highlighted that as for the fulfillment of the highest aim of life the individual has to satisfy his artha and kama by following the Dharma, so a Nation must aspire to fulfill its highest aim by organizing its social, political, economic, religious and other activities by following its svabhava and svadharma.
After Dr. Mishra’s welcome address Shri. Thiruvenkat, Chairman, Tamilnadu State committee of Sri Aurobindo Society offered Prof. Gurumurthy ji a token of gratitude on behalf of SAFIC, Sri Aurobindo Society, Puducherry.
As we all know Prof. Swaminathan Gurumurthy ji is popularly known as a writer and journalist in India and a chartered accountant by profession, is a corporate adviser of high standing. Highly rated for his investigative writings, he has ceaselessly campaigned against corruption at high places. Shree Gurumurthy ji is a Visiting Faculty of IIT Bombay in the domains of Economic, Financial and Management. He is also the Distinguished Professor Legal Anthropology in Sastra University. Shree Gurumurthy ji was consistently seen by the media as a powerful personality. With this introduction Deepa Vaitheeswaran, a volunteer and resource person at SAFIC, invited Prof .Gurumurhty to deliver the lecture.
Prof. Gurumurthy ji started his talk with the definition of what a nation is and the idea of India as one nation. He continued to throw much light on the present day economics, politics and socio religious issues etc. His lecture was profound, powerful and deeply analytical, and was full of anecdotal vignettes, transcending history, spirituality and economics with startegic aspects. Some of important statements he made include:
“Nobody thought that the other man’s difficulty was not his…that is Dharma…”
“Economics of atomised societies different from ours”.
“Modernity’s mandate was to throw overbroad “Dharma, Artha, Kama and Moksha”.
“Western Classifications have been internalised on an erroneous premise of western universalism”.
The lecture was attended by a good number of enthusiasts and was well responded. Prof. Gurumurthy ji also answered thoroughy the questions raised by few who attended his talk.
As a part of his trip Prof. Gurumurthy ji also visited the Sri Aurobndo Ashram and the Ashram playground. He was also briefed about the various activities of SAS and particularly of SAFIC.
